SUNSHINE CASITAS

Attending college has many challenges, especially for our students from low-income backgrounds who generally have to work through school and are often the first in their families to receive any kind of higher education. For the students living in the Sunshine Casitas, housing, at least, does not have to be one of them.

The Lapan Sunshine Foundation is proud to offer reliable, furnished, low-cost housing for a select group of Lapan College & Career Club students and Nana’s Mavins through the Sunshine Casitas program. Currently, the Sunshine Casitas consists of four two-bedroom/one-bathroom homes close to the University of Arizona in Tucson and one four-bedroom-/three-bathroom home close to Arizona State University in Tempe. The Tucson Casitas are all on the same property and share community features, including a chicken coop, garden and koi pond.

Casita students are expected to follow a code of conduct that includes a weekly 10-hour volunteer requirement with an organization of their choosing, a GPA minimum and maintenance of the Casita chicken coop, gardens and koi pond. The Casitas are furnished in part with generous donations from the community. We continue to be in need of quality furniture and home goods.
